What’s your favorite cardio machine?
You can get a perfectly good cardio workout by walking, running or even jumping rope. But many people find they prefer the sort of cardio machines you find at gyms. The advantages of these machines are obvious: you can always use them, no matter the weather, and they have settings which let you control the intensity of your workout. When used in an air conditioned gym or home, you can stay cool at all times, which may enable you to work out longer and harder during hot weather.
The two most popular types of machines for homes are treadmills and exercise bikes or cycles. This is partly because they’re more affordable than elipticals and other machines, and also because some models take up less room in homes that don’t have much space. Either of these are a great choice for individuals looking to buy their own machine. Even the least expensive models will give you a good workout in the comfort of your own home.
What you want to look out for is reliability, comfort (especially with bike seats – ouch!) and how well the machine matches your abilities.
- Reliability: Check Amazon and other websites for reviews of any machine you’re considering buying to get an idea if it’s the best one in your budget.
- Comfort: make sure a treadmill absorbs enough shock for your ankles, knees and lower back. Try it out in a store. If you’re ordering online and can’t try it first, rely on customer reviews online. Bikes have the advantage here since there is no shock to absorb while you cycle. But make sure the seat is comfortable before purchasing any bike.
- Matching your abilities: some people can’t tolerate sitting on a bike for long enough to get a good workout. Others can’t handle even the most shock absorbent treadmill because of knee or back trouble. If this is you, you may need to choose an eliptical or stepper machine, rather than a bike or treadmill. If that’s out of your price range, you may prefer to hunt around for an affordable gym membership.
