The term “definition” is often used incorrectly in fitness terms. Not only by average people, but by experts writing for magazines and trainers at gyms. People often use the term to refer to the opposite of bulk: a slim, lean muscular physique rather than a bulky shape.
“Definition” actually refers to visible muscle. Bulky bodybuilders typically have excellent definition, with the shape of many muscles clearly visible under the skin. People who work out to a lean shape may or may not have – or want – the “definition” of visible muscles. When we talk about “six-pack abs”, for example, that’s definition – highly visible muscles. But if you just want a flat tummy, definition is not necessarily what you’re after.
How do you get definition?
It’s not from the heaviness of the weights you’re using, or the number of reps, though those things are necessary for building muscles. You get definition primarily by losing fat. For example, you could have “six-pack abs” under some belly flab, but until you lose the belly flab, their definition will never be visible. You need a very low body fat percentage to achieve definition.
You get a low body fat percentage by:
- Doing cardio workouts to burn calories.
- Eating a particular diet. For most people, a low fat diet, but if you’re at all insulin-resistant for any reason, you may find low carbs work better for you.
- Weightlifting – the more muscle you develop, the higher your resting metabolism.
