Overcoming objections to dancing

1099130_breakdance_4Many of us have preconceived ideas about dancing and why we shouldn’t do it. For example:

  • Some religions forbid dancing.
  • Some men see dancing as not masculine enough.
  • Some people fear they are too uncoordinated to be seen dancing.

If your religion forbids dancing, then by all means, do what it tells you. But if it’s any other reason holding you back, there are a few things you should consider.

Dance for men

If the word “dance” makes you think of ballet, you should be aware there are many forms of dance in the world, some of them quite masculine. Take for instance Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian dance designed to teach men martial arts moves. The dance itself includes fight moves and is awesome to watch. Or consider a traditional country line dance or square dance, which is designed for men and women in pairs, but tends to be more lively than, say, a waltz.

You may be surprised to learn that male athletes use ballet for cross-training. It’s great for improving flexibility, agility and balance. Even well-known football players train with ballet. In fact there are special dance courses that teach ballet to those using it for this purpose rather than to become dancers.

Fear of uncoordination

If you think you’re uncoordinated and therefore shouldn’t take a dance class, ask yourself this: how else will you ever become coordinated? Dance of any sort teaches you better balance, agility and rhythm. If these things don’t come naturally for you, then a dance class is the very best thing you could do to change that.

So what if you never get to be much good at dancing? If you enjoy it, why should you let a lack of aptitude stop you from doing it? If you’re uncomfortable being seen in public, get a video and dance at home. Or just “rock out” to your favorite music at home, where you can be as uncoordinated, falling-down, tripping-over-furniture, laughing-yourself-silly as you want to be. At the very least, this is a great way to work off calories and have a good time.
