Want to learn to dance?

1155447_tango_4_silhouetteIf you find other forms of exercise boring, you should try dancing. It provides a great workout while being fun, and probably something you already do for recreation without thinking of it as exercise. As with any exercise, you need to make sure you are doing the moves the correct way to avoid injury and maximize the benefits. There are several ways to go about this.

Private instructors are not cheap, but during your sessions, you have their complete attention and get to progress at your own speed, dealing with any problems or special needs that come up as you go along. This is the best possible alternative, and even if you believe the expense is too high for your budget, you should call some instructors and find out what options they offer. This is an especially good option for anyone who is shy about being seen by others while exercising, or who feel pressured to keep up with others in an exercise class.

Group lessons are the next best alternative. Classes are typically arranged by style of dance and experience level. These types of lessons will be more affordable than private instruction, and you will get less attention and personal assistance. But it works very well for many people. In fact, it can be an opportunity for socializing, which can make it an even more fun way to get a workout than private instruction. Groups will often have friendly competitions from time to time, which is stimulating for those who need some competition to get going.

Some dance groups are more formal than others. The formal ones are structured around teaching you skills you could actually take into professional dance competitions. The less formal ones are more about having a good time. They tend to teach you the basic moves and little else. But if your goal is to have fun and get exercise, not become a professional dancer, these types of lessons can be perfect. These classes also tend to be among the most affordable – you may even find some for free or nearly free at a local YMCA or YWCA.

You can also buy videos that teach you how to dance. This is the most affordable option, and is certainly good for someone who is homebound, shy about dancing in front of others, or who has a schedule that precludes classes. The downside is that you may run into problems you cannot solve, and unlike an instructor, a video can’t tell you what you’re doing wrong. But there are many resources online for figuring out specific dance moves and diagnosing yous missteps. If you combine a video with other resources, it should be more than adequate
