Finding your perfect gym

915227_health_gymnasticsNot all gyms are created equal. Some have better equipment while others have better trainers, for example. The difference in price from one gym to the next can also be considerable. In order to figure out which gym is best for you, there are a lot of factors to consider.

  • Location. If the gym you choose isn’t conveniently located for you, you probably won’t go as often as you should. When are you going to go to the gym? During lunch on your workdays? Then you need a gym close to work. Or if you’re more likely to go just after work, then anywhere along your route home might work. Or if you plan on going to the gym from home later in the evening, or before the workday starts, you’ll need a gym that’s close to your home.
  • Hours. Most gyms have long hours, but if you can only get to the gym at 4am or midnight, make sure you pick one that’s open when you need it.
  • Trainers. If you don’t plan on working with a trainer, skip this step. If you do, you need a trainer who’s experienced, who gives you enough time and attention, and who listens when you tell them about problems you’re encountering. You can also hire trainers from outside a gym, who work as independent contractors and will meet you at the gym of your choice to help you work out.
  • Equipment. Do they have enough equipment that you won’t be waiting in line for a cardio machine? Is the equipment well-maintained? You don’t need the very latest gizmos for a good workout, so don’t get dazzled by features. You want machines that work and that are available when you’re ready for them.
  • Cleanliness. The gym should be clean. The equipment should be clean. The lockers should be clean. The gym should have rules posted about wiping down equipment with anti-microbial solution after use, unless they have staff who handles that.
  • Cost. If you’ve found more than one gym that meets the criteria above for you, then the only other consideration is price. And if the gyms that meet your criteria are too expensive, you might need to be flexible on your requirements to find a gym you can afford.
