Ballroom Dancing is Making Waves

Eurogames Berlin, Men's Ballroom, A Class.b

Ballroom dancing used to be thought of as old-fashioned – an activity for the middle-aged to do on board a cruise ship. But its reputation is now becoming hipper and younger. Ballroom dancing is challenging, fun and sociable – just what all sorts of people are looking for.

Ballroom dance is also gorgeous to watch. Like figure skating, it can be thought of as a sport more than as a form of dance – in fact, the International Olympic Committee now recognizes it as a sport (even though it is not included in the Olympics). The training ballroom dance requires is daunting, and competition is fierce.

Of course, the term “ballroom dancing” encompasses quite a range of dance styles. There are “nightclub dances”, many Latin styles, some forms of swing dances, and even Cajun dances. If you’re looking to start taking ballroom dance lessons, get as many free lessons at various studios teaching different styles as you can, so you find a style that you enjoy most.

International Style

One of the main categories of competitive ballroom dancing is “International Style.” It includes two main subcategories: Standard and Latin. In standard, the dancers wear formal attire – tails and ballgowns. The music is traditional western/European – classical as well as more modern. Standard style dances include waltzes, tangos, foxtrots and similar old standbys. In all dances, couples are required to remain in closed formation at all times.

In Latin, the costumes are more form fitting and, in the case of women, skimpy. There’s a more informal, emotional feel to Latin dance styles that makes it seem less staid and more sensual than Standard dance styles. Latin dances include the Paso Doble, the Cha Cha, the Samba, Rumba and more.

American Style

American Standard differs from International Style in several ways. The requirement for couples to remain in a closed stance is relaxed to allow more creativity in footwork. American Standard contains two subcategories: Smooth and Rhythm. Smooth styles include tangos, waltzes, foxtrots, etc. The Rhythm dances include the Cha Cha, Bolero, Mambo, the East Coast Swing and the Rumba.
