Ballet Dance Classes for All Ages

Ballet is not just for kids or people hoping to dance professionally someday. Adults are discovering the health benefits of ballet and incorporating it into their fitness routines. There are ballet lessons specifically designed for people at various ages and at various skill levels, so adult beginners do not have to take classes with children.

Like other forms of dance, ballet teaches far more than how to dance in a particular way:

  • The study of ballet teaches discipline. You must be dedicated to your practice and determined to overcome obstacles and setbacks in order to make progress in ballet. This is the essence of discipline. This is one of the reasons ballet is great for kids (of both genders), but it’s never too late to start learning self-discipline.
  • Ballet also teaches socialization. In class, you must learn to function as part of a group. You must be patient if other dancers need more instruction than you do, and maintain confidence if you turn out to be slow at mastering a step.
  • Ballet is great exercise. It burns calories, strengthens muscles and increases flexibility. These benefits are great for kids, but even more essential for adults. The practice of ballet can make you feel younger and may actually stave off some health issues in later years.
  • Learning ballet enhances self-esteem. Even if you are not the best in class, or there are steps you never quite master, the steps you do master should be a source of pride. Ballet is difficult: to gain any proficiency requires more discipline and work than most people can be bothered to give.

If you already have good self-discipline, ballet will reinforce it. The same is true with social skills and fitness – no matter your level of skills, ballet is a fun new challenge that will add to your current skill set.

For fitness, ballet is particularly helpful because it works most of your major muscle groups at the same time. It also improves one’s gracefulness of movement. An additional benefit is that it’s low impact and easy on joints.
